The Vision
The Fitzsimons site has a long history of healing—and a clear vision for the future. Founded in 1918 as Army General Hospital No. 21 to serve WWI veterans, the site was renamed in1920 to honor William T. Fitzsimons, the first Army officer killed in the War. The Fitzsimons Army Medical Center provided quality health care to both civilian and military populations for 80 years.
When the site was put on the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) list in 1995, officials from the City of Aurora, University of Colorado and University of Colorado Hospital banded together to preserve its unique heritage. Their goal: to transform the former Army Medical Center into a square mile dedicated to education, patient care, basic science and bioscience research.
Partners in Good Health
In 1996, City of Aurora and University of Colorado officials established the Fitzsimons Redevelopment Authority (FRA)—a special-purpose entity created exclusively to imagine and govern the metamorphosis of this historic site. In partnership with the University of Colorado, City of Aurora, The Children’s Hospital and other public entities, the FRA acquired much of the site’s existing acreage (including 152 historic structures) and began to implement their ambitious redevelopment plan.
Within the 578-acre site, the FRA designated a 170-acre parcel for a world-class medical and research park to be developed by Forest City Science + Technology Group. A leading developer of life science campuses across the country, Forest City works with some of the nation’s top universities, corporations and research institutions. When fully realized, the Colorado Science + Technology Park at Fitzsimons will be a world-class scientific community offering cutting-edge space, services and support to more than 30,000 people.
